The 1,100 inhabitants were mostly transferred from the Harrismith concentration camp. The inhabitants were housed in the former 'Tin Town' Boer prisoner of war camp, which was before that used as barracks for troops during the siege of Ladysmith.
This concentration camp was reputed to be the most comfortable concentration camp in South Africa. Only eight deaths occurred in this camp.
