The Natal Coast tourism region is divided into two from Durban - southwards to Port Edward on the Transkei border and north to the Tugela River on the border with Zululand.

Each of the regions has its own character. The South Coast is the more developed with a string of small beachside communities offering hotel, bed and berakfast and other types of accommodation. This region has long been a favourite of upcountry visitors.

The North Coast is quickly catching up with the South Coast. It is still largely comprised of very small communities isolated from each other due to the absence of a coast road. The southern area around Ballito is being developed rapidly as a dormitory suburb of Durban.
