A year after the first sugar was planted, Edmund Morewood moved onto his own farm, Compensation so called because he bought it after a cotton estate he managed went bankrupt.
His cane became very popular and there was a steady stream of farmers wishing to buy tops. In 1850, Morewood built the first sugar mill, the produce from which caused a sensation which lead to increasing purchases of land on the North Coast.
A replica of the mill has been built on the same site.
