The town stands in what has become known as Shaka's Way - the route that the king took when launching attacks against the Pondos in the South.
Close to the town is La Mercy, the proposed site of the new King Shaka International Airport. North of Umdloti is Desainagar - 'the town of Desai' - named after the first Indian South African to become a millionaire.
