Ithala has an excellent auto trail to facilitate visitor's game viewing, and a notated guide booklet is available in the shop at Ntshondwe, Ithala's superbly designed, multi-award winning camp. Ntshondwe's 39 thatched chalets blend into a lush setting of acacias, wild figs, cabbage trees and other indigenous flora. A variety of self-catering chalets, with two to six beds each, some of which have being designed for use by the handicapped, are available, while 28 other chalets without catering facilities are geared for tour groups and conference delegates.
There are three self-contained stone cottages which are strategically set around a picturesque dam. Two cottages are situated on the waters edge with the deck extending over it. The other is more secluded with a small stream flowing past it from a nearby weir. All have large sliding doors that open onto a wooden deck with panoramic views of the bush. Each cottage sleeps two adults and two children with bathrooms en-suite. Kitchenette area includes stove, microwave, mini fridge and all cutlery and crockery. The Nyandu Tented Environmental Camp, nestling under a canopy of acacia trees alongside the banks of the Nyandu River can accommodate 20 adults or 30 children. The kitchen tent has cooking and washing up facilities, as well as a freezer.
The three tastefully decorated bedrooms (one en-suite) are large, as are the common living areas. The kitchen with its old-fashioned coal stove is a particularly popular gathering place and the preferred dining area for most groups. Two large geysers and a wood-burning donkey ensure a reliable supply of hot water. A rondavel next to the house can accommodate a further four people, or more, dormitory-style - ideal for youth groups.
There are eight five bedded fully-equipped chalets situated besides the water’s edge. Leokop and Sandford campgrounds, both with available plug points, each accommodate 150 people. Ample facilities for day visitors are available, including playgrounds and boat launching ramps.
