The dam is the centre of a Ezemvelo Wildlife resort and boating, yachting, canoeing and fishing are available. There are more than 250 species of birds around the dam and a hide from which visitors can watch raptor feeding in the winter months. Mammals include: rhino, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, springbok, impala, buffalo and eland. Controlled hunting in a portion of the reserve is allowed in season. There is a small Boer War museum.
There is a choice of self guided trails including the one to the summit of Spioenkop to see the famous Boer War battlefield from which there is a splendid view of the Drakensberg Mountains.
Twenty five fully equipped six bed chalets and a camp site. There is a rustic camp for 8 people 14km from the chalets.
