Apart from Zulus, comprising the majority of the Africans, there are descendants of both European settlers and Indian labourers.

The predominant ancestry of the Europeans is English which has lead to the sobriquet of 'The Last Outpost' being applied to KwaZulu-Natal.

However, there is a large Afrikaans, Portuguese, Italian, Greek and German population while the Indians themselves are composed of both Hindus and Muslims, Tamils, Gujaratis and others.

To round off the mix, there is a small population of French speakers (both from France and Mauritius), Chinese and Cape Coloured.

This mélange is reflected in the variety of food, crafts, art and dance forms that are available in the city.

Durban's Buses

Although not part of the normal cultural attractions, take a look at Durban's Indian buses. The external paintwork can take on the appearance of Bollywood on benzedrine and is usually of a very high quality and replete with a bizarre name whose meaning seems to be known only to the bus's owner.

Inside, they come complete with wall hangings, pictures, mementoes and a thumping sound system.
