Basically, they are informal pubs, the need for which arose from the absence of places to gather and socialize in the burgeoning townships in the early years of the twentieth century.
All have a bustling evening clientele and, along with the TVs, pool tables and music, most serve traditional African foods. Some also have regular live music. You are advised only to visit shebeens with an authorized tour guide (contact Tourist Junction).
