Set in the far northwest of Zululand, Itala is a relatively recent Ezemvelo Wildlife acquisition. In terms of topography, it is one of the most beautiful reserves in South Africa and the main camp - Ntshondwe - was voted one of the 50 most picturesque camps in the world. The main camp is located halfway up a mountain and overlooks much of the reserve.
The accommodation extends from luxury lodges through self catering chalets of varying size to three bush camps and three camp sites elsewhere in the reserve.
There is a restaurant, take away cafe, bar and deck overlooking a waterhole. There are accompanied day walks, self guided trails, night drives and wilderness trails. There are also picnic sites.
In addition to over 300 species of bird, there are elephant, rhino, leopard, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, hyaena, warthog, eland and buffalo amongst many others - plus 320 bird species.
The terrain varies from grassland on the higher areas to riverine forest. Between April and October (winter) there are highly recommended bushveld trails (contact Ezemvelo Wildlife).
